TECHTONIC

Techtonic 2011
16x20 inches, acrylic on canvas

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory which describes the large scale motions of Earth's lithosphere, the crust and the portion of the upper mantle that behaves elastically on time scales of thousands of years or greater. (Wikipedia)

With the number of volcanoes becoming active and the earthquakes that seem to be increasing, one can imagine the movement of the mantle - a massive, yet minute, slow dance over many years ( the plates (all of North America, Greenland and parts of Eurasia comprise a single plate!) move 0-100 mm - yes millimeters - per year).

Wouldn't it be something if we could film this over - let's say - 1000 years, then speed it up, like those films of flowers opening - and see the dance of continents?  That would be the 'tech' part of Techtonics.

Too bad time travel doesn't exist...
